James Barry, nacido como Margaret Ann Bulkley, enfrentó rígidas normas del siglo XIX tras adoptar una identidad masculina para acceder a la medicina, campo prohibido para las mujeres. Tuvo logros destacados como la primera cesárea documentada en el Imperio Británico con supervivencia de madre e hijo, y reformas en hospitales militares que mejoraron las condiciones sanitarias. Barry también impulsó campañas de vacunación para grupos marginados, como prisioneros y leprosos, revolucionando la salud pública. Se desempeñaba como buen elemento y su obsesión con la higiene y la innovación quirúrgica le hicieron una figura influyente. Su relación con Lord Charles Somerset protegió su secreto, pero generó controversias que marcaron su carrera. Tras su muerte, el descubrimiento de su sexo biológico desató un escándalo que no opacó su historia en la medicina.
