Hyperglycemia promotes inflammation and increases cardiovascular risk. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between glycemic control and inflammatory and cardiovascular risk markers in patients with type 2 diabetes (T2DM). A cross-sectional, correlational study was conducted involving 300 adults (240 diabetics classified according to their HbA1c levels and 60 controls). Glucose, HbA1c, lipid profile, fibrinogen, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), atherogenix index of plasma (AIP), and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) were measured. Patients with T2DM had higher levels of fibrinogen, hs-CRP, AIP, and ESR compared to controls and among groups with poorer glycemic control (p<0.001). A significant positive correlation was observed between HbA1c and all biomarkers evaluated (p<0.0001). These findings support the use of HbA1c not only as an indicator of glycemic control but also as an indirect marker of cardiovascular risk in T2DM.
